How to Explain Medicare Advantage to Potential Clients

When someone calls to ask questions about Medicare, it is important that your employees are prepared to answer succinctly and effectively. Medicare can be a confusing topic, so a simple explanation is the best way to earn a client’s trust and help them understand the coverage they need.a couple of people that are talking to each other

Original Medicare vs Medicare Advantage

One of the most common questions that clients ask is about Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. What is the difference? Is one better than the other?

The basic difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage is where it is available. Original Medicare is offered through the federal government while Medicare Advantage is offered by a few private insurers. However, one of the most important differences is the coverage offered.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare is a federally mandated health insurance program available for seniors around the age of 65. This insurance comes with two parts:

  • Part A: Part A in Original Medicare covers expenses related to hospital inpatient care, skilled nursing facilities, nursing home care, hospice care and some home health care.

  • Part B: Part B in Original Medicare helps cover some preventive services and outpatient care, doctor’s tests and services, durable medical equipment, home health services and more.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are also known as Medicare Part C. This type of Medicare plan encompasses Part A and Part B and cannot be purchased unless the client is already enrolled in Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage also offers more coverage not offered by Original Medicare. Since this insurance comes through a private insurer, there are more coverage options. Many of these plans also offer coverage for vision, hearing, dental and wellness that is not covered by Original Medicare.

Coverage for prescription drugs, known as Plan D, is also available for many Medicare Advantage policies. Under a basic Original Medicare plan, clients may not receive coverage for prescription drugs.

How to Qualify for Medicare Advantage

So long as a client qualifies for Original Medicare, they should qualify for Medicare Advantage. Clients of Medicare Advantage are typically those 65 years of age or older, although there are a few younger people with qualifying disabilities who may get Medicare Advantage.

Clients must sign up for Medicare in the open enrollment period. If they miss this period, they must wait for the next enrollment period to enroll in an Original Medicare plan.
